Tile Quantity and Waste Factor Calculator

Calculate the exact number of tiles needed for your project, including a customizable waste factor to account for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

Formulas Used

1. Room Area
Room Area (sq ft) = Room Length (ft) × Room Width (ft)

2. Effective Tile Dimensions (including grout joint)
Effective Tile Length (ft) = (Tile Length (in) + Grout Gap (in)) / 12
Effective Tile Width (ft) = (Tile Width (in) + Grout Gap (in)) / 12

3. Area Covered by One Tile
Tile Area (sq ft) = Effective Tile Length × Effective Tile Width

4. Base Tile Count
Base Tiles = ⌈ Room Area / Tile Area ⌉

5. Total Tiles with Waste Factor
Total Tiles = ⌈ Base Tiles × (1 + Waste% / 100) ⌉

Assumptions & References

  • Grout joint width is added to both the length and width of each tile to model the repeating grid accurately.
  • A 10% waste factor is the industry-standard minimum for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone patterns typically require 15–20%.
  • All tile counts are rounded up to the nearest whole tile — you cannot purchase a fraction of a tile.
