Calculate how many bags of thinset mortar you need for your tile installation project based on area, trowel notch size, and bag coverage.
Formula
Step 1 — Base Area:
Area (ft²) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Step 2 — Area with Waste:
Areawaste = Area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Step 3 — Effective Mortar Thickness:
Square-notch trowels (≥ ¼ inch): transfer factor = 50% of notch depth
V-notch trowels (< ¼ inch): transfer factor = 33% of notch depth
Mortar Thickness (ft) = Notch Depth (in) × Transfer Factor ÷ 12
Step 4 — Mortar Volume:
Volume (ft³) = Areawaste × Mortar Thickness (ft)
Step 5 — Mortar Weight:
Weight (lbs) = Volume (ft³) × 100 lb/ft³
Step 6 — Bags Required:
Bags = ⌈ Weight ÷ Bag Size ⌉ (rounded up to nearest whole bag)
Step 7 — Coverage per Bag:
Coverage (ft²/bag) = Bag Size (lbs) ÷ (Mortar Thickness (ft) × 100 lb/ft³)
Assumptions & References
- Dry polymer-modified thinset mortar density is approximately 100 lb/ft³ (ANSI A118.4 / industry standard).
- Square-notch trowels deposit approximately 50% of the notch depth as the effective mortar bed thickness after tile compression.
- V-notch trowels deposit approximately 33% of the notch depth as the effective mortar bed thickness.
- A 10% waste factor is recommended as a default to account for mixing waste, uneven substrate, and cuts.
- Trowel notch size recommendations follow TCNA (Tile Council of North America) guidelines: larger tiles require larger notch trowels to achieve ≥ 95% back-coverage.
- Bag coverage figures assume a flat, level substrate. Uneven or highly absorptive substrates will increase consumption.
